Houseplant

You’ve placed all your clutter into cheap self storage and now you have room to be a little wild and a little creative with your decor. Could it be time to experiment with large houseplants? We think so! Checkout these 7 leafy lovelies for inspiration:

1. Monstera Deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant)

The classic jungle houseplant, the Monstera Deliciosa has stunning rich green leaves with fenestrations that become more elaborate as the plant gets more mature. It’s a vine plant so it benefits from a moss pole to grow up and will continue to grow up to 15 feet tall unless you trim it. Luckily it is easily trimmed and propagated so you can gift your friends with the offspring for years to come!

2. Colocasia (Elephant Ear Plant)

The larger relative of the alocasia, the colocasia can be grown indoors or outdoors, although it tends to do better as a houseplant in the UK. The leaves can be 3 feet long and there are various varieties in different shades depending on your taste. We love the

Black Magic colocasia which is wonderfully gothic, and a real visual feature for the home.

3. Chamaedorea Elegans (Parlour Palm)

This cute mini-tree looks totally tropical in the home. It can grow to around four feet in height and looks fantastic against tropical colours like bright pinks and minty greens. Why not grab an old stool from the cheap self storage unit and paint it a bright colour? It will make a phenomenal plant stand for your palm, costing you next to nothing too!

4. Euphorbia Trigona (African Milk Tree)

This gorgeous plant is a beautiful, sculptural addition to your home if you’re not keen on leafy plants. It can grow to a massive 8 feet in size and if it is really happy, it will bloom for you in growing season. Just be careful not to put it in direct sunlight as its a succulent and prefers bright, indirect light rather than bright direct light.

5. Strelitzia (Bird Of Paradise)

This stunning plant has large leaves all emerging from a single stalk. It loves a nice conservatory where it can grow to around 7 feet tall, and 4 feet wide. If you care for it well, you get a beautiful bright orange flower that looks like a bird in flight, hence the plant’s name.

6. Ficus Lyrata (Fiddle Leaf Fig)

The fiddle leaf fig is common in America as a houseplant but it’s making its way here as a popular large houseplant addition. The leaves are dark green and waxy and the plant can actually grow to a full sized tree so, you’ll want to get used to pruning it down to suit your environment. It’s a great option if you want a statement plant but, it is hard to care for so beginners might want to steer clear.

7. Philodendron Xanadu

The leaves on this plant are beautiful, splaying out dramatically to look like hands with many fingers. The leaves can grow up to 40cm long, and rather than the plant being tall, it is wide. It’s a great choice for a basket floor plant in the hall where it can stretch out without restriction.
